Problem solvers to unite in Geraldton

Enquiring minds looking to solve problems in Geraldton are registering to put their problem-solving abilities to the test at GovHack Geraldton on July 29 to 31.

Anyone interested in helping use government data in exciting new ways to solve problems facing our city is welcome to register.

GovHack Geraldton facilitator Summer Pirrottina, who is coordinating GovHack on behalf of Pollinators, described GovHack as a “digital recycling project.”

So many government agencies and NGOs have compiled and stashed away all types of data, but have neither the resources nor motivation to see if this data can be used in different ways to answer questions or solve problems,” Ms Pirrottina said.

It is well known that knowledge equals power. GovHack gives us the chance to access, interpret and present data to share knowledge, raise awareness and start change.”

The event takes place over one weekend, starting on Friday July 29 at Pollinators’ CityHive, where people meet the participants and mentors, live link to the Perth event, choose projects and form teams.

Over Saturday and Sunday teams will have unlimited access to the CityHive space and mentors both here and in Perth, to work on their projects and record videos explaining their use of data.
Then on Sunday night they will finalise entries, link into Perth for the judging and celebrate achievements.

Ms Pirrottina said the competition was not just for tech types – previous entries had included art, jewellery, a digital sign, a board game, historic film pieces, a virtual reality game, a 3d model, a visualisation of data, an informed article and web apps.

GovHack Geraldton is supported by Mid West Development Commission, through its Innovation Agenda and commitment to growing a Culture of Innovation, as well as the Mid West’s science engagement group Scinapse, Pollinators and GovHack.
